하경천은 상속권을 얻기 위해 심완신에게 비밀 연인으로 자신의 곁에 남아줄 것을 요구하며, 상속권을 손에 넣으면 심완신과 결혼하겠다고 거짓 약속한다. 하지만 자신의 이익과 지위를 위해 그는 망설임 없이 백씨 집안의 딸과 정략결혼을 선택한다. 상처받은 심완신은 떠나기로 결심하고, 뒤늦게 후회한 하경천은 이미 돌이킬 수 없는 후회에 빠진다.
