After unexpectedly traveling back in time, Zhang Ye believes his modern knowledge will help him thrive in the past. However, he quickly realizes that without official status, life is harsh. With the imperial exam as his only chance, Zhang Ye earns a place as a scholar-in-training but has no money for the journey. In a desperate attempt to fund his trip, his father sells him and his sister into servitude. As Zhang Ye sets off for the capital, he learns of the sacrifices his family has made for him and vows to change their lives for the better.
