国公府の御老母君、常珍珍は七歳の少女の体に思いがけず転生し、一族が衰えてゆく姿を目の当たりにする。彼女は常家を再び興さねばと決意し、遊び惚けた子孫たちを科挙へ導き、曾孫娘の才を伸ばしてやり、押しつけられた縁談からも救い出す。さらに科挙の不正を暴き、貧しい家から出た首席の名誉を守り、九親王の陰謀を次々と打ち砕き、乱を鎮め、天下を安んじていく。
