Six-year-old William Brown misunderstands that his father, Robert Brown, dislikes his mother, Sarah Wilson, but he is determined to reunite with his mother. After finding Sarah Wilson, he hopes that his parents will fall in love again over time and repair their broken relationship, so he does everything he can to bring them together. However, fearing that they might develop further resentment if they learn each other's identity, he secretly helps conceal the truth from both sides.
