Eleanor, descendant of a fallen marquess, is forced to marry Baron William and watches his family consume her dowry and estate. During William's military absence, she begins a secret three-year affair with Alexander, a castle attendant who is actually a prince in disguise. William returns with his pregnant mistress Lillian and humiliates Eleanor in public. At a royal banquet, Eleanor reveals the accounts that prove she supported the household and demands divorce. Alexander then discloses his royal identity and supports her. A court restores Eleanor's property and title, and she eventually marries Alexander with the queen's approval.
