Kayla, a women's ice hockey player, was forced out by her coach to make room for the coach's girlfriend. Unwilling to accept defeat, she switched to refereeing and earned international certification. Later, officiating at the national championship, she fairly penalized her former coach, sending him off the ice, and publicly released audio recordings to reveal the truth. Ultimately, she became the first American female head referee to officiate at a Winter Olympics, defending fairness with her whistle.
