Lu Chengyuan, the son of a powerful warlord, falls in love with the commoner Xu Yan, and they live together in hiding. Just before giving birth, Xu Yan saves another pregnant woman, Lin Juan, but is betrayed and killed instead, leaving Lu Chengyuan devastated by the loss of his wife and child.
