In a remote mountain village, Chen Batou makes a living by capturing rare snakes, drawing constant scolding from his grandmother. His grandson Xiaojun, born with a snake-like skin condition on his temple, is seen as a curse and grows to resent his grandfather’s snake-catching. A herbal merchant, Huang San, offers a high reward for capturing the Golden-Striped White Snake King but later tries to seize it at a low price, even attempting theft and illusions—unsuccessfully. Fearing they have offended the mountain spirit, the Chen family releases the snake. The Snake King spits venom on Xiaojun’s face, and Huang San appears to expose the plot. As they prepare to leave, Xiaojun’s condition vanishes, and Chen Batou realizes the snake is spiritually gifted. Soon after, Huang San’s group is killed by snake bites. The story ends with a call to respect nature and protect wildlife.
