Julian uses the situation to investigate the true culprit behind his kingdom's fall, while Alaric reveals his vulnerabilities amidst poison attacks and uprisings. Eventually, the truth comes to light, the rebels are defeated, and the tyrant publicly appoints Julian as co‑ruler and consort. The two then lay down their royal titles and retreat to the mountains and rivers, spending the rest of their lives together as equals.
