In Republican-era Shanghai, Murong Qingyi (played by Zhang Linghe), the young son of a warlord, suffers years of abuse from his adoptive father after being mistakenly switched at birth. While fleeing as a teenager, he is rescued by Ren Susu (played by Wang Churan), but the encounter brings catastrophe upon her family. Years later, the two meet again and gradually fall in love.
