Brooke Kirk, after a near-death diving accident, finds her mother bleeding and unconscious at home. Her husband Danny Shaw and his mother are forcing her to transfer property. When Brooke tries to intervene, Danny attacks her with the help of her best friend, Wendy Jensen, who is secretly colluding with him. Danny then kills Brooke's mother and throws Brooke into the sea, framing it as an accidental death after matricide. The false news of Brooke's death is later reported, arranged by her childhood friend Nolan Jacobs. Still alive, Brooke, now under the identity of Ava Jacobs and after a year of plotting, leaves, determined to enact revenge.
